History
Unnayan, the organization has been working on issue-based, need- based as well as rights- based development since its inception. This journey of Unnayan can be divided into three different phases.

1989-1993: The early phase of Unnayan witnessed a youthful spirit of the founding members where a number of charitable works were done in the state of Orissa, particularly in the Northern part of the state, i.e. Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts. During this phase the young group associated with Unnayan responded to the needs of community by organizing primary health camps, eye camps, blood donation camps. Noteworthy that this period in the history of Orissa witnessed a number of natural disasters like flood and cyclone. The group conducted relief operations as a response to these disasters. Unnayan conducted all these activities by collecting and mobilizing support from local generous individuals and institutions within the vicinity of the residence of members.

1994-1999: By this time Unnayan had earned some goodwill by its philanthropic activities and there was a shift in its approach to developmental work. Though it had not totally discarded the charitable activities, it recognized that development is a process and process orientation was reflected in its activities. The major programmes and activities that bear the testimony of this are on Increasing female literacy
